MARTHA MELAKU

Of counsel

Martha received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a minor in Linguistics and a Master of Arts in Political Science, with emphasis on International Political Economy from the University of Texas at Arlington. She received her Juris Doctorate from the University of Oklahoma College of Law where she was awarded the Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher, the Bess Zeldich Ungerman, and the Cecil L. Hunt Memorial Scholarship. She served as the business development editor for the American Indian Law review and was a member of Robert J. Turner Inn of Court and Phi Delta Phi.

Martha has worked for the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) specializing in residential and small business loans where she drafted and reviewed legal documents and contracts to ensure federal and state rules and regulations have been met and ensured the proper securitization of the agency’s interests. She also worked in the field of energy and natural resource law specializing in oil and gas transactions in the Barnett Shale Gas Fields. Most recently, Martha worked for Bank of America ensuring regulatory compliance (RESPA, FCRA, UDAAP, etc.) for residential mortgages. She also directed all aspects of complaint handling and risk management for deposit accounts, credit cards, and mortgage servicing. She also served as a subject matter expert for executive leadership on bankruptcy handling, foreclosure, CFPB and OCC regulations, and FHFA compliance.


Martha served as Vice Chair of the City of Garland Community Multicultural Commission, after being appointed by the Mayor of Garland. She was Chair of the Communication, Learning & Education Committee (CLUE) and the Sub-committee for MOSAIC Festival for the City of Garland. Additionally, she served as a Board member of the Garland Civic Theater.

Martha is an Affiliate Professor at the University of North Texas Dallas, College of law. She is a member of the State Bar of Texas, the Dallas Bar Association and a member of the Texas State Bar Real Estate and Probate Section.
